Stress and Keto Weight Loss
Stress and Keto Weight Loss don’t usually go together well.
I personally have a genetic predisposition to anxiety, panic, and depression. I’m a calm person. I don’t have any great fears about life. But when something in life is off…it could be my diet or something really big going on…I will have anxiety responses that don’t make sense.
For instance, when my anxiety/panic system is active, the simplest act can create a fight or flight response in me. I mean simple like reaching for a doorknob.
That’s because the doorknob isn’t really scaring me, it’s just the thing I’m looking at when my stress hormones go haywire. Then my brain interprets it like this: “That doorknob is really scary”. But then my mind, my intelligence, says “A doorknob is not scary, and it can’t harm you”. So I know it’s just my brain chemistry going haywire.
Keto the Savior Diet
Sounds pretty simple. It took me about 11 years to figure that out. Because I thought I was dying all the time. It was like living in a horror movie.
Why am I telling you all this? Because, a version of the keto diet made my whole health situation about 95% better.
But, stress and keto weight loss don’t always go together.
I didn’t know I was gluten sensitive. Keto removes all grains from the diet, which is a very good thing. Everyone is gluten sensitive, it’s only a matter of how much.
The gluten sensitivity was messing me up gradually. It was getting my body far out of balance. Finally, in my early 40’s, the damn broke and I started having full blown anxiety and panic attacks. But I didn’t know what they were.
I’m Mr. Cool. I thought panic attacks came from being afraid of things. It’s the other way around. The wrong hormones in your system make you afraid of things that others aren’t afraid of.
This all took years to find out and figure out.
Stress Weight Loss
Here’s the interesting thing. Instead of gaining, I lost weight because of the way I was feeling. It hit me right in the stomach so that I would have NO appetite at all. I started losing weight in a free fall.
I know that might sound wonderful to you if you are struggling with being overweight. But it’s not. You can die from it. I was getting close before I stopped the grains.
Keto Against Stress
Here’s the catch. Your body is not like mine. You are unique. Most people react to stress by overeating. It depends on which hormones get released.
I have a very specific genetic pattern that created mine. Most people don’t have what I have.
Most people try to stop the bad feelings of stress with a short term food rush. That quickly adds up to way too many calories of the wrong kind.
This means you have to take a look at your life. See where stress is coming from. See what you can do about it.
There are many really simple things you can do to lower stress within yourself. If you can just lower it by 20%, it can make a world of difference.
We will go into some of the techniques in the next post. Stress and keto weight loss is a little bit of a puzzle to be solved, but not complicated really.
Meanwhile, chill out. Relax. Don’t take everything as life and death. You’ll be a lot happier.
