Low Carb Alcoholic Drinks

In a previous post, we talked about the pros and cons of consuming alcohol while doing the keto diet. I don’t drink myself, so this is strictly from the current known studies, not my personal experience.

You can consume alcohol on keto, but it does pause your ketosis. It’s not as bad as a meal full of carbs, but it does stop your ketosis for a day.

So I don’t recommend alcohol if you are in the early stages of the keto diet, or if you are really trying to lose weight quickly.

If you are really serious about weight loss first and foremost, wait on the alcohol until you have reached your weight goal. Then you are more able to expand your choices of what to put in your body.

Another big point right up front.

If you are on the keto diet for health reasons, like type 2 diabetes or fatty liver syndrome, then DO NOT consume alcohol.

The alcohol will work directly against you while you are trying to heal those health problems.

Wait until your health issues are completely resolved, then you can start thinking about adding alcohol.

OK, what are the low carb alcoholic drinks?

Spirits or Hard Liquor:

The more distilled the better. Vodka, Tequila, and Gin.  You can combine them with a low carb, or no carb mixer.

For instance, Vodka with club soda and a slice of lime.

Wine:

Wine is low carb, but not zero.  White wines are usually better than Red Wine in the carb count.  These are not hard and fast rules, but generalizations.

Sweet wines are usually higher in carbs than dry wines.  Champagne on the dry end are pretty low carb.

Beers are pretty much off the table. They start with grains and get worse from there.

Any sweetened cocktails are obviously out also.

Many low carb alcoholic drinks are being developed to serve the keto/low carb market. So keep your eyes open for new choices.

Just remember to always always check the labels. Don’t trust the name of the product, just because it has ‘low carb’ on the label.
