Can I Have Dessert on Keto?

Oh yes. We have lots of recipes for you at Pretty much any dessert you want, there is a Keto version.

When you start Keto, there is one huge thing you need to do. Cut out sugar. Really to cut out most carbs. But if you have sugars in your diet, your body will always burn that for energy. It will never use fat. All the fat you have is staying right where it is.

We have to make fat be the first choice of the body for energy.

To do this, you have to MAKE your body use fat. It won’t volunteer.

You’ve got to remove sugar itself, and the carbs that turn right into sugar in the blood.

The Big Bugaboo

However, there is a big bugaboo waiting. Your sweet tooth.

The sweet tooth is not just some result of you being weak.

People blame themselves for their sweet tooth, but that’s not how it works.

Many of us have sugar cravings to the point that it’s like a drug addiction.  If  you have certain genetics, and this includes me, it is identical to a drug addiction.

It's Not Your Fault

Here’s what you need to know….It is not your fault. We humans have a built in tendency to blame ourselves and be hard on ourselves. But this is literally out of our hands. If we have certain genetics, our bodies scream at us for a sugar fix.

To help us get through the day, many of us chase the sensation of “sweet” on our tongues. It gives our brain a feeling of well being…for a very short time. Then we feel bad, and the craving starts again.  It sounds a lot like a heroin addict.

Keto does allow for certain sweeteners, but only the ones that don’t create a reaction in the pancreas, and a change in our blood chemistry.

Here are the sweeteners that are OK.

  1. Stevia – I recommend Liquid Stevia
  2. Pure Liquid Sucralose (liquid version only. powder is a problem)
  3. Erythritol (which you will find under the brand name Swerve)
  4. Xylitol
  5. Monk fruit
  6. Tagatose
  7. Allulose

These sweeteners won’t create blood sugar problems, but they also don’t give you the drug like rush of sugar. You will have to get used to them. Everything in the Keto lifestyle gets easier and better with time and repetition.

Your taste buds and your brain will adjust. After you have been off of sugar for a while, it won’t even taste good. These alternate sweeteners will start tasting “right” to your tongue.

Get your body into the habit of these healthy sweeteners, and you’ll forget all about that nasty old drug habit you had…..Sugar!

Can I Have Dessert on Keto? Oh yeah. There's a whole tasty world waiting.

So Keep Up!  You can do this.

Act, don’t react.

Have a beautiful, healthy day.
