What breaks a fast

There are many forms of fasting.

Water Fasting is when you only have Water. Anything else breaks the fast.  Anything that causes a metabolic response will break the fast.

But I have personal knowledge, that you may not have to be that strict.

It’s better to be strict, especially at first. You will get much better results if you are strict about sticking to your diet and or fast.

As you go along, you may find that the sharp edges aren’t so sharp. It’s ok if once in a while, you have a little coffee with heavy cream in the morning.

Your body has to already be in what I call ‘steady’ state. It has to be cruising along and doing well with your system of intermittent fasting.

In other words, be more strict when you are a beginner. Later on, as you become more familiar with how your body responds, you can figure out what works for you.

A Fasted State

We are trying to get the body into a “Fasted State”.

Here’s what that means:

Low Insulin

Normal Blood Glucose

Higher Glucagon (a good thing)

Increased Fat Burning

Higher Ketones in the blood.

We are trying to get our bodies to burn fat, NOT muscle, or even worse, brain. Yes, you can actually lose brain if you are losing weight for the wrong reasons.

We want to keep the body in the ‘Fasted State’ as much as possible when we use intermittent fasting. That’s why it’s important to know what would take us out of the ‘Fasted State’.

What Breaks a Fast?

Green tea is ok during fasting.  It contains natural ingredients that might actually help with the weight loss.

Herbal Teas (with no sweetener) are fine.

Black Coffee plain is Ok.

Cream:  Although is does add 45 calories or so, they are fat calories. That is barely enough to stop your body from using your own fat for fuel.  So technically it adds a little food value, which normally breaks a fast, it has such a small effect on your insulin levels, that it could be OK.

Of course, this all depends on amounts. If you take 5 cups of coffee with cream, that starts to go over the line. We are talking about one cup, or at most, two. After that, you should take it black.

Bulletproof Coffee. It has more calories from fat than regular coffee. But the calories are from fats which turn into ketones in the liver. This helps you get into ketosis.

So even though the calories in the Bulletproof coffee give your body something to burn instead of your own fat, it pretty much keeps you in a Fasted State.  This can be really helpful if you are just starting out with weight loss and fasting.

You can get energy, but still stay in your ketosis and fasting state. So Bulletproof coffee can be useful to keep you on your fast, even if it ‘technically’ is not fasting.

As always, you are going to have to be very observant and watch how it works for you. You are not a piece of metal machinery. You will need to learn your body. Learn what works for you and what doesn’t.

What breaks a fast, and what doesn't.
