What About Keto Breath

What About Keto Breath?

Keto breath describes a temporary condition where your breath smells funny.  (That’s the scientific term, smells funny 😉

Your breath could either smell fruity, but not in a great way, or it can smell almost like a chemical odor.

That’s because one of the ketones your body makes is acetone, the same ingredient that is in nail polish remover!

Now don’t get all excited about having nail polish remover in your body, it’s a very small amount.

How does it happen?

Your body breaks down fats for energy when you are in ketosis. When this happens, fatty acids are converted into ketones.

Ketones are totally natural, and you make them every night when you are sleeping and not eating. They are made as the fatty acids are burned up to use for energy as you lose weight.

Some of the ketones make odors. Others, like beta hydroxybutyrate, do amazing, healthy things to the brain and tissues.

Having ketones present in the blood means you are in ketosis, which is the goal of the ketogenic diet.

It’s Not All Peaches and Cream

What About Keto Breath?  The one ketone that might cause temporary problems with the breath is acetone. It might cause a funny taste in the mouth, and a funny breath odor.

That’s because the excess is expelled through the lungs and breath.

Keto breath can last a couple of weeks, so it’s usually not that huge. Nowadays, we can wear a mask and it’s not out of place.

There is Something You Can Do

Increase liquids and do deep breathing. Flushing the system with water and other liquids can keep the waste products moving. Always make sure you have electrolytes in the water, especially in the beginning of keto.

Brush and floss. Depending on your situation, this can help a lot. In other cases it won’t help, but you can’t keep your teeth too healthy, so it won’t hurt anything to do this.

Try eating less protein in relation to the other macros. The body makes ammonia as it breaks down protein. Ammonia could be making a strong odor as it leaves the body through the lungs.

If it’s a really bad problem, you could even bump up your carbs for a few days to see if that helps.

Then, There’s the Most Obvious

Last, just wait it out. It will go away with time as the body adjusts to the new way of eating.

Meanwhile, try gum and breath mints, sugar free of course. They will at least camouflage the odor enough to get by.

What About Keto Breath? Nothing. It will pass in time, but you can help it along if it bothers you that much.
